STUDY OF THE HYDRO-FRACTURING PROCESSES IN HETEROGENEOUS ROCKS USING AN ELASTO-PLASTIC CELLULAR AUTOMATON

An hydro-mechanical (HM) coupling model was incorporated into the elasto-plastic cellular automaton (EPCA) so that the EPCA model has the ability to simulate the failure processes of heterogeneous rocks in HM environment.Using this model, hydraulic fracturing processes of heterogeneous rocks were studied numerically.By analyzing failure patterns, hydraulic head and fluid flow vector variations as well as the crack initiation pressure, the mechanism of hydraulic fracturing in heterogeneous rocks was declared. It is concluded that the heterogeneity and confining pressure have great influence on the hydraulic fracturing process of rocks.
