INVESTIGATING CREEP BEHAVIOUR IN AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEELS THROUGH SYNCHROTRON X-RAY TOMOGRAPHY

Synchrotron x-ray tomography at SPring-8 (Japan) using beamline BL20XU has been performed on as-cast and ex-service creep rupture specimens fabricated from a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel alloy. The material of interest typically used in steam reforming tubing.Synchrotron x-ray tomography was applied to quantify the extent of creep damage in terms of void volume fraction and distribution throughout the specimens in a non-destructive manner.Preliminary results indicate an increase in void density and radial alignment of voids in the centre of both samples.Finite-element modeling results indicate a similar trend and the results are discussed.
