RECENT TRENDS IN LOW GRADE WOOD POLYMER COMPOSITES MODIFICATION TECHNIQUES AND THEIR MECHANICAL AND THERMAL CHARACTERIZTION

The naturally occurring wood requires surface and bulk modifications for improving its properties and value as it is degraded easily by microorganism, thermo oxidation and mechanical stress due to various weather conditions. The commonly available low-grade wood such as Eucalyptus and Poplar, are modified and characterized for their mechanical and thermal properties after catalyst heat and radiation induced curing processes. The vinyl monomer impregnation has the highest commercial significance among the various wood treatment methods. On of its methods is thermoplastic impregnation, which has made great claims in recent times to enhance the mechanical and thermal stability as well as fungal resistance of low-grade wood varieties and the developed products are referred as wood polymer composite (WPCs).In this paper,an exhaustive review of the current status and trends techniques for modifying the properties of several low-grade wood verities like Akamatsu Pinus and Cryptomeria Japonica,Birch,Poplar and Spruce using some commercially available vinyl monomers such as acrylonytrile (AN) in combination of additives, coupling agents and co monomers along with the curing processes such as gamma ray curing applied to synthesize has been presented.
