NANOMETER SPINEL LITHIUM MANGANATE FROM EXPLOSIVE BURNING

Spinel phase LiMn2O4 is of great interest as cathode materials for lithium-ionbatteries.The combustion products were characterized by scanning electronmicroscopy. And,powders X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopywere used to characterize the products.Lithium manganate with approximately 100nm agglomeration morphology and more uniform secondary particles, with smallerprimary particles of diameters from 30 to 100 nm and a variety of morphologieswere found. The oxides produced by this cheap method affirmed the validity ofcombustion synthesis of fine powders.Lithium manganate with a fine structuredifferent from that of the normal spinel is formed after combustion wave treatmentdue to the addition of ammonium nitrate. It might also provide a cheap large-scalesynthesis method.Reagents combustion with the addition of ammonium nitrate isstrongly nonequilihrium processes.Free metal atoms are first released with thedecomposition of reagents, and then theses metal and oxygen atoms are rearranged, coagulated and finally crystallized into lithium manganate during the expansion ofcombustion process.
