EFFECT OF MAGNETIC-ELASTIC-THERMAL COUPLING ON THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIORS OF TERFENOL-D RODS
Terfenol-D rods,as a kind of giant magnetostrictive materials, are often usedas active elements of device for antivibration due to their superior materialproperties. However, they exhibit complex nonlinear and hysteresis propertiesunder the action of heterogeneous operating condition such as appliedtime-varying magnetic field, mechanical pre-stress and varied workingtemperature, which makes the accurate control difficult,in order to have a goodunderstanding on their dynamic behaviors,a numerical simulation on themechanical response of a Terfenol-D rod is proposed in this paper through themagnetic-elastic-thermal coupling and hysteresis constitutive relations, and theinfluence of eddy currents generating in the rod is taken into account. The resultsindicate that the frequency and the amplification of the TerfenoI-D rod highlysensitive to applied magnetic field and pre-stress and working temperature, whichreveal that the effect of the magnetic-elastic-thermal coupling is an importantfactor to the dynamic responses of Terfenol-D rod. Moreover, the results showgood fit to existing experimental data and are very different from the uncouplingones.
