CRACK-TIP STRESS FIELDS FOR AN ARBITRARILY ORIENTED CRACK IN A FUNCTIONALLY GRADED MATERIAL
Crack-tip stress fields for an arbitrarily oriented crack in a functionally gradedmaterial (FGM),which has an exponential variation of elastic modulus along thegradient direction, are obtained through an asymptotic analysis. The Poissons ratioof the FGM is assumed to be constant in the analysis. The higher order terms in theasymptotic expansion of crack-tip stress fields are derived to bring out the influenceof non-homogeneity and the crack direction on the structure of the crack tip fieldsexplicitly.Explicit form of the higher order terms embodying the effect ofnon-homogeneity for individual stress components is established. The analysisreveals that only the higher order terms in the expansion are influenced by thematerial non-homogeneity and the crack direction has significant influence oncrack-tip fields.
