CURRENT TREND AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS OF BIOMATERIALS FOR HARD TISSUE REPLACEMENT AND THEIR TESTING

The development of biomaterials requires an understanding of the interaction ofartificial man-made materials for use within the human body. For orthopaedicapplications,a strong emphasis is placed on the ability of the materials to bear loads andresist material degradation for long periods of time.An ideal hard tissue substitutematerial should thus be tolerated by the host tissue without any adverse reaction; it shouldpromote bone formation, have appropriate mechanical strength,be malleable and resorbafter it has fulfilled its function. There are three groups of material used for implants:metals and alloys, polymers and ceramics, classified,on the basis of their in-vivo tissuereactions,as Biotolerant,Bioactive,Bioinert and Biodegradable. In this paper, anexhaustive review of biomaterials used for orthopedic applications such as metallicbiomaterials, including the 316L stainless steel, bioceramics, with special emphasis onCalcium Phosphate group of ceramics and particularly the HAp and HAp compositeceramics, which are finding favor of the researchers due to their mechanical properties, ispresented. It concludes with the future directions of the present developmental work oforthopedic biomaterials
