MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF STAGGERED-ALIGNMENT BIOMIMETIC COMPOSITES
In the paper,the biomimetic composites with staggered hard platelets aligned inthe soft matrix are investigated by FEM simulations.The results of simulationsshow that the biomimetic composites have large stiffness,high strength and goodtoughness.The fracture process in the biomimetic composites is simulated.It isfound that the failure mainly occurs in the soft matrix,and the fracture path isdramatically zigzag and therefore very long,which consequently enhances thefracture toughness of composites.Besides,the effects of the aspect ratio of hardplatelets and material parameters of the constituents on the mechanical propertiesare also studied.
