DYNAMICS OF THE CYTOSKELETON: A PORTRAIT OF LIVING CELLS AS HETEROGENEOUS AND NONEQUILIBRIAL ATERIALS
Dynamics of cytoskeleton (CSK) largely determines the living cells mechanicalproperties that are important for cell functions both in health and disease.Despiteextensive studies,CSK dynamics is still not fully understood due in part to itscomplex and heterogeneous nature. Here,we present our recent studies on thecomplex modulus of CSK with respect to strain frequency. We demonstrate thatliving cells are not only heterogeneous, but also in many ways resemblenonequilibrial physical systems, thus suggesting a novel physical portrait of theliving cell as a heterogeneous and nonequilibrial material.
