EFFECT OF SURFACE MODIFICATION ON STRAIN-SENSING ABILITY OF CARBON NANOFIBERS COMPOSITE SENSORS
Acidification (vitriol/nitric acid) and γ-ray irradiation technology were applied tothe surface treatment of carbon nanofibers (CNFs).The surface shapes of treated anduntreated CNFs were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, also the functional groups on the surface of CNFs were investigated by X-rayphotoelectron spectroscopy.By the means of ultra-sonication,the CNFs/epoxycomposite strain sensors were prepared in the lab,and the strain response andsensitivity were tested. The experimental results showed that the stability andrepeatability of composite sensors upon cyclic loadings were improved, because themodification of CNFs improved the dispersion of CNFs in the polymer andincreased the interfacial bonding between CNFs and polymer matrix.
