SINTERING AND MUD-CRACKING IN THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS

Multi-scale models are presented for the sintering of Electron Beam PhysicalVapor Deposited (ePVD) thermal barrier coatings.The models link diffusionalprocesses at the scale of contacting feathery columns with the macroscopicdeformation and sintering response.The influence of imperfections in the initialmicrostructure is evaluated and the conditions under which imperfections can growinto cracks are identified.
