MULTI-PHYSICAL PHENOMENA IN COAL ASSOCIATED WITH COALBED METHANE RECOVERY AND CO2 GEO-EQUESTRATION
In this paper, mechanical deformation and gas adsorption/desorption occurring in coal under reservoir conditions are investigated with a specially designed true tri-axial stress coal permeameter (TTSCP) using large coal samples with CH4 pre-adsorbed.The investigation provides experimental information about the gas storage and transport in coals for better understanding of the coalbed methane (CBM) recovery and CO2 geo-sequestration enhanced CBM (CO2-ECBM).Whilst the mechanical deformation is subject to the external stress and gas pressure in pores which are controllable with TTSCP,volumetric change in coal induced by gas adsorption/desorption in terms of coal swelling/shrinkage is monitored using strain gauge detached on the coal sample. The results can be used for determination of pore compressibility of coal and evaluation of the swelling/shrinkage coefficients.
