DISLOCATION THEORY BASED MODELING FOR SHORT/SMALL CRACK GROWTH IN AIRCRAFT ALUMINUM ALLOYS

This paper presents a study on dislocation theory based short/small crack modeling, and its application for fatigue life estimation of 2024-T351 aluminum alloys. An existing crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) model was modified to simulate microstructurally short crack growth by taking into account the effects of microstructural features,I.e.,grain size, grain boundary, and crack-nucleating particles.Based on this model,a Monte Carlo program was developed to estimate short crack growth life, and the analytical results matched the tests reasonably well.
