SIZE AND TEMPERATURE DEPENDENCE OF THE LOW-DIMENSIONAL SOLID STATE ELASTICITY:LOCAL BOND AVERAGE
A local bond average (LBA) approach has been developed for the thermo-elastic behavior of low-dimensional systems, showing that the unusual performance of the low-dimensional systems can be consistently understood in terms of the energetic and geometric response of the representative bonds to the external stimulus such as coordination environment, operation temperature, and mechanical stress, etc. It is also shown that the broken bond induced local strain and quantum trapping and the associated densification of charge and energy in the surface skin dominates the mechanical performance of the low-dimensional systems.
