MODEL FOR THE PHYSISORPTION-INDUCED DEFORMATION

In molecular physisorption, surface morphology may change such as forming a dimple. The dimple formation may lead to industrial applications such as restructuring the surface.Deep understanding of such deformation theory might yield promising methods for precisely nanostructuring surface morphology on material surfaces.Levi et al.2 calculated the depth and shape of the dimple on the basis of the theory of elasticity and their calculation of the surface deformation field was performed in the linear approximation since the forces exerting on the medium from adsorbed molecule are computed at the undeformed configuration of the medium. In fact, the forces vary with the deformation process and this feature of displacement-dependent makes the deformation problem as a nonlinear problem. The present paper addresses a continuum mechanics method to solve this nonlinear problem. The depth and shape of physisorption dimple are studied. The dimple will appear on a deformable surface in molecular physisorption. The force exerting on the medium from the adsorbed molecular is displacement-dependent.
