INVESTIGATION OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF THE CARBON NANOTUBES COATED COPPER COMPOSITE MATERIALS
Many recent studies show that modulus and tensile strength of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated copper cant reach the expected theoretical values. Moreover, the tensile strength,Youngs modulus decrease with the increment of CNTs content in the electroless plating solution.By electrolessly depositing Ni-P-CNTs on the copper substrate, which was prepared by means of composite electroless plating, tensile testing shows that without activating the CNTs used in plating step, the tensile strength,Youngs modulus indeed increase with the increment of CNTs content in the electroless plating solution.SEM is used to observe the fracture faces of specimens too.Comparing the experimental results with theoretical calculation of equivalent modulus,it is found that random distributed discontinuous fiber model and its empirical expressions are applicable in forecasting the equivalent Youngs modulus of CNTs coated copper composite.
