STATE-OF-THE-ART OF MODERN CONCRETE SERVICE LIFE
In this paper, the failure mechanisms of domestic and international importantinfrastructures and the reason lost the service lives are comprehensively analyzed. In order toensure the accuracy and reliability of durability evaluation and service life prediction ofdifferent concrete projects, they must be conducted according to the complex serviceconditions. Alter reviewing the current study on the durability and service life of concrete, two points must be put attention as follows. The physical and chemical interactions inducedby the coupled environmental factors are crucial for the concrete damage degradation, whichshould be firstly made clear for the concrete structures in practice. Secondly, the failureprocess of damaged concrete at different service time and research scales is accelerated by thecoupled effects of environment and external load. It is emphasized that the relation betweenthe time-varying characteristics of concrete microstructure and the mechanical behaviordegradation of macro concrete structure must be comprehensively revealed. Finally, themodem concrete structure should be scientifically designed by the combinational method ofload capacity design and durability design. The investigation on the equivalent conversionfrom the environmental chemistry effect to the mechanical action is the primary step foradvancing the renovation of new concrete design system.
