Modeling Global Supply Chains: Intelligent Tools for Strategic Supply Chain Management
As global competition increases, supply chains become more extended, and consumer expectations rise, the need for decision support tools which identify optimal network configuration is at an all time high. One tool which has gained traction in recent years is computer software based supply chain optimization modeling. This paper examines the growing role of this tool and provides the results of four case studies in which companies utilized commercial optimization software to inform major strategic and operational issues regarding their supply chain network configurations. Our findings indicate that an opportunity to significantly increase bottom line performance exists for companies which have not previously undertaken supply chain optimization efforts. We also provide insights regarding the implementation of these modeling projects, and espouse the benefits of industry and academic partnerships in studying these issues.
