Structural Knowledge and Capabilities: A Comparative Study of the Evolution of International Strategies of Chinese Manufacturing Enterprises
Chinese manufacturing enterprises have inevitably acquired international strategies since 2001. However, the subsequent results evolve quite differently. Based on a resource-based view and evolutionary theory , this paper conducts a comparative case study in the electronic information industry to analyze the divergence of the international strategies of two groups of enterprises-one represented by Changhong, TCL, Konka and Skyworth (FGEs), the other represented by, Lenovo, Huawei and ZTE (SGEs). It argues that structural knowledge and capabilities are essential factors leading to their performance divergence. It finds that more tacit knowledge and better comprehensive capabilities make SGES behave more effectively than FGEs in international strategies. It also finds that the trend of comprehensive capabilities for neither kind of enterprise is optimistic. This paper warns that the expansion of knowledge and capabilities are the main constraints on Chinese manufacturing enterprises real international strategies.
