Research on the Operating Process in Disc Refiners
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the shear behavior of pulp fibrous suspension during refining can be adequately described by a new concept called: Shear Factor ξ,which applying to non homogeneous suspending even in non laminar flow but it is not a fluid property and is of course dependant on the process machine where the pulp shear behavior is studied. In this paper,by studying the physics of the operating process in disc refiners, the axial force exerted on the shaft is found to have 2 contributions:a hydraulic force and a normal reaction exerted on 2-phase fibous pad in each confined zone of the gap clearance. This empirical result can be theoretically obtanied by considering the Shear Facter λ,that can be determined. Also, its variations and process dependency are highlighted. Two important results came from this description:---A theoretical equation of the net power consumed in a disc refiner can be derived using the Shear Facter λ,similarto DALZELLs empirical equation.---A Sommerfeld number for the refining operation in disc machines can be obtained generalizing the hydrodynamic description of the refining process published by RADOSLAVOVA et al.
