The Release Mechanism of Anionic Trash during Old Newspaper Pulping

Some dissolved substances(anionic trash)such as pectic acids,lignin-like substances,released during the recycling of American 8# old newspaper were studied systematically in this paper.The release mechanism of the anionic trash was studied and the DS(Dissolved Substances)was characterized by GC(Gas Chromatography)both qualitatively and quantitatively.During the process of pulping,with the increase of NaOH,H2O2 dosages and pulping time,both the cationic demand and conductivity of DS increased,together with an increase of the absorbance at 280 nm.The carbohydrates were characterized by GC and the results showed that the total amount of carbohydrates increased,especially xylose and galacturonic acid.The main carbohydrates released during pulping increased.Nine of the carbohydrate components which were determined were: xyiose,mannose,galacturonic acid,glucose,galactose,arabinose,4-O-methyl glucuronic acid,rhamnose,glucuronic acid,with xylose being the most.With no addition of hydrogen peroxide( only at a pure alkaline condition),the release of carbohydrates increased from 16.22 mg/L to 32.18 mg/L.With the addition of hydrogen peroxide,the release of carbohydrates was 43.77 mg/L.During the process of pulping,the effect of sodium hydroxide on the release of carbohydrates was more pronounced than that from hydrogen peroxide.Increasing the time of pulping further promoted the release of carbohydrates.
