DEBOND PROPAGATION IN SANDWICH STRUCTURE UNDER UNIAXIAL IN-PLANE COMPRESSION

Sandwich structures can offer great potential for the development ofoptimized structures with high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio.Acompression loaded panel containing a sufficiently large debond may fail bylocal skin buckling over the debond, and the debond may propagate furtherleading to total collapse of the panel. Thus, design of damage tolerant sandwichstructures requires knowledge of the critical load to propagate a certain sizedebond. In this paper, the FEM predictions of debond propagation loads fall belowthe experimentally measured values. The difference between measured andpredicted loads for debond may be due to sticking of the embedded Teflon filmbetween the skin and core in the tested panels, which would constrain furtheropening of the debond, reduce the stress intensity factors, and increase the localbuckling load. For circular debond and elliptical debond with the ratio of shortaxis to long axis greater than 0.5,direction of debond propagation isperpendicular to the applied load. And when the radius of the circular debondreduces to 15mm,the sandwich structure buckles overall before the debondpropagates. But for the elliptical debond with the ratio smaller or equal to 0.5and greater than 0.15,the debond begin to propagate from the tip of the shortaxis. For the elliptical debond with the ratio smaller or equal to 0.15,thesandwich structure buckles overall before the debond propagates.
