Barriers to Technology Innovation of Manufacturing SMEs in China-An Empirical Study Based on the Technique of RII
On the basis of a sample of 188 Chinese SMEs,this paper attempts to:(i)explore the relative importance of main barriers to innovation for SMEs by using the technique of Relative Important Index(RII),and(ii)seek to highlight differences between foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs)and wholly Chinese-owned enterprises(WCOEs).The study finds that lack of technical personnel(RII =0.769) is the most important barriers to innovation for SMEs.Also, the study indicates differences are found between FIEs and WCOEs(the former emphasizing lack of financial capital, and the latter emphasizing lack of external innovation partners lack of marketing channel and lack of effective management system ).Overall, these findings indicate that many Chinese SMEs have difficulties in achieving successful innovation. So,policies should be made based on internal and external barriers to innovation for SMEs and aimed at improving innovative capability of SMEs.
