Brain γ-Aminobutyric Acid Detection with Improved Lineshape by Double Quantum Filter Technique

γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA)is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter for the normal function of human brain. It is difficult to detect GABA signal with the conventional single quantum filter technique due to its relatively low concentration and overlapping with other signals from creatine(Cr),glutathione(GSH),as well as macromolecules.A point-resolved spectroscopy(PRESS)-localized double quantum filter (DQF)which combines a small angle selective pulse has been developed to detect GABA on a 1.5T clinical scanner. Our experiments were conducted on three phantoms: one containing GABA only, another Cr only, and the third with mixture of GABA and Cr.The improved lineshape of GABA was evidenced by the spectrums from the three phantoms.GABA C-4 signal retention at 3.01 ppm was measured to be 30% and the suppressed Cr ratio was 1250:1.The current study demonstrated that the lineshape of GABA C-4 resonance was improved from doublet to triplet due to the proposed DQF technique.
