Study on the Intelligent Ability and Its Structure among 345 Preschool Children
Objective To investigate childrens intelligence and analyze its structure in order to understand cognitive development in children and provide information for the school education and healthy growth of the preschool children.Methods Three hundred and forty-five senior kindergarten children(191 boys and 154 girls)coming from three kindergartens in Jintan were selected to participate in the study.Intelligence was measured by intelligence quotient(IQ)using the wPPSl.Results The mean scores of childrens IQ in three kindergartens were(101.80±11.88).There were no gender differences in full intelligence quotient(FIQ)(P>0.05),and verbal intelligence quotient(VIQ)in both male and female children were significantly lower than their performance intelligence quotient (PIQ)(P<0.01).The percent of IQ disassociation was 28.70% in the children,with 69.70% of the children had VIQ lower than PIQ,the IQ disassociation children did not differ from other children in terms of FIQ(P>0.05).There was no obvious trend in the analysis of the intelligent ability scatter model.However,the scatter scores of the verbal intelligence subscale were lower than that of performance Intelligence subscale(P=0.000).Conclusions Children in this cohort had relatively inferior V1Q.Further studies should be conducted to assess replicability of this finding and test the following competing hypotheses:(1)increasing access to educational materials selectively enhances performance ability,or(2)the 1980s WPPSI for Chinese children is in need of revision in order to get with the new times.In addition,this cohorts intelligent ability scatter model is worthwhile for follow-up study.
