Modulation of practice-dependent plasticity in default brain functionality in child abacus experts
In this study,we want to explore whether default functionality of the children brain is functionally reorganized by longtime special practice. Two groups of children were studied: child abacus experts and control. The brain activations were measured by using functional MRI during performance mental calculation. In both groups, this task normally produces task-independent decreases(TID)relative to a baseline of passive fixating a white point. Our results indicate that longtime practice of abacus mental calculation does not change the network of default mode but it modulates the degree of the deactivation. The degree of brain deactivation in child abacus experts is much lower than the control children during performance of mental calculation.
