The Effect of the Angry Faces on the Attention
The attentional capture effect of emotional faces in sufficient or restricted attentional conditions were investigated. In a modified visual search paradigm, three kinds of schematic faces(angry, happy, and neutral face)were included as the stimuli.Participants ought to search for a target face having a dot and respond the dot position. The results of Experiment 1 showed that only angry face as the target can facilitate response compared to the control. And angry face as distractor can slow down the response.Experiment 2 included inverted faces for decreasing emotional content and found the effect of inverted angry face was not the same as the upright condition. When attention was cued to a specific location in experiment 3,the effect of angry faces outside the attended area became weaker. In conclusion, the results support that angry face can capture attention automatically but require attentional resources.
