The UKs Expanding Renewable Energy Programme
The UK is increasing its targets for renewable energy. It is likely to seek a share of 15% of its primary energy to come from renewables sources by 2020; with most of the growth coming from wind power. Over 30 Gigawatts of new capacity are likely to be built in this period, with much of this capacity in offshore wind, and with the UK becoming the worlds largest offshore wind market from this year. This paper reviews the progress that has been made in the UK renewables sector, with particular reference to wind and offshore wind. It reports on the process of industry consultation by government, and the changes in policies and programmes that are likely to result.
