Multi-Dimensional Optimisation Of O&M Strategies For Offshore Wind Energy Projects

An advanced operational simulation tool has been utilised in order to explore issues surrounding the optimisation of Operations and Maintenance strategies for offshore wind projects. Key strategic options facing developers and contractors, such as the utilisation of helicopters or offshore manned platforms, have been examined within the context of a notional offshore wind project. The approach of examining individual options in isolation (linear optimisation) has been contrasted with simulation of all possible combinations of O&M strategic options (multi dimensional analysis). This has allowed the inter-dependent nature of many strategic options to be explored. A simulation based approach is proposed to systematically evaluate multiple O&M strategies and account for the complex interdependencies between the available options. The associated optimisation tool comprises several components including a graphical user interface, a simulation engine, a database of results and a multi-criteria optimum search engine. In addition, a validation exercise has been conducted utilising real life performance data from two operational offshore wind projects in order to build confidence generally in the model and its key inputs.
