Commissioning And Operating Experience From The Beatrice Demonstrator Project
This paper summarises the achievements of the DOWNVInD programme and in particular describes the challenges encountered during the commissioning programme. It highlights the major difficulties encountered during this phase, accessing the turbines, and describes the impact this had on the programme. The access system developed for the project was safe, effective and well liked by the commissioning crews, but the vessel used was unable to cope with the conditions. Thus the project team undertook a review of alternative vessels and identified the Windcat workboat as a suitable alternative. A trial was arranged for February 2008. This resulted in a dramatic increase in access to the machines and showed that the access system developed by the project and Windcat vessel provided a safe and effective system for to transfer people and equipment from the support vessel to the turbine.
