Intelligent Battery Sensor-an enabler for environment-friendy vehicles

About 90% of all automotive-related innovations are of electronic nature. The ever greater number of electrical functions in cars requires new strategies in order to satisfy the rising requirement of electrical energy. With the implementation of additional electrical features into the cars a sophisticated energy management is needed. Energy management addresses generation, distribution and storage of electrical energy in vehicles. Additionally, the advantages are not only limited to the operation mode and standby of the car,but also applicable during car production and service. The primary goal of electrical energy management within modern cars is to ensure the availability of sufficient electrical energy for the next start of the engine. Additionally, all electric functions during standby and service can be provided as long as possible. Energy management is one of the most important features to ensure reliability, enable new technologies and to improve fuel efficiency. Accurate knowledge of the battery status forms the fundamental basis of each energy management function in motor vehicles. The innovative Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) has been developed specifically for this purpose. Thus, battery sensing is an enabler for new technologies such as idle stop, recuperation and power efficient mechatronics leading to environment-friendly vehicles.
