High-performance film capacitors for HID applications

Automotive manufacturers are increasingly replacing halogen lamps with high intensity discharge(HID)lamps for headlights. The advantages of HID lamps over conventional halogen bulbs include not only a higher efficiency for the emitted light and superior illumination quality,but also longer lifetimes and reduced dimensions. In this respect,most recent designs tend to be more compact,locating the ignition module closer to the lamp,featuring higher luminous efficiency and improved visibility under adverse weather conditions like rain,snow or fog.Their energy consumption is roughly 50％ lower than that of conventional lamps,and the service life of the lamp and associated components is longer. HID lamps are therefore being used on a large scale in Europe,Japan and China(see Figure 1).
