Development of Steel Surface Melting Technology with DC Plasma Arc Driven by AC Magnetic Field
Direct current (DC) thermal plasma is widely used in steel industry as heat sources such as tundish heating and welding. Generally, the DC plasma as a heat source is confined to a small area through torch nozzle by the thermal pinching effect. However perpendicular imposition of alternative current (AC) magnetic field to DC plasma enables to spread heating area through reciprocal motion by the Lorentz force.1-2 In this paper, a novel application of this technique to melt the surface of steels is proposed and investigated through fundamental experiments and theoretical analyses.
