Effect of Electromagnetic Field on the Process of Semi-continuous Casting for Al-4% Cu Billets
Billets of Al-4%Cu alloy with and without electromagnetic field conditions were examined. Effects of electromagnetic field on microstructure, hardness, tensile strength and element distribution were investigated. The results show that with electromagnetic field employed in the casting process, the microstructures of Al-4% Cu billets is refined effectively; hardness and tensile strength are increased and better uniformly element distribution is observed. The mechanism for the refinement is supposed to be a combination of effects of electromagnetic field on the melt, crystal detachment and grain multiplication.
