Industrial Experiment of Soft-contact Electromagnetic Continuous Casting

A prototype machine and an online measurement system for frictional force were developed to meet with the actual surroundings of Bao Steels continuous casting plant. And the industrial experiment of soft-contact electromagnetic continuous casting was successfully carried out using 0.18%C low alloy steel. During the experiment, the mold powder consumption and frictional force were measured. The results showed that mold powder consumption was increased about 18% and the frictional force between strand and mold was greatly reduced due to the high frequency (16.6 kHz) electromagnetic field. When the EMC power was enhanced to 144kW, oscillation marks were totally suppressed and the surface roughness of billets was about 1/3 of that obtained in the conventional continuous casting.
