Fiber Optic Nerve Systems for materials and structures that can feel pain

In the field of fiber sensor technologies,recently,distributed and multiplexed sensing schemes have been studied and developed.In the systems,a long length fiber acts a “nerve for feeling strain and/or temperature distribution along the fiber.Performances of the artificial nerve systems have markedly improved within the last couple of years,in spatial resolution and measurement speed.By embedding the “fiber-optic nerve system in aircraft wings,bridges and tall buildings,these materials and structures can sense damage to prevent disasters.
