Dynamic Performance and Control of ER Damper in Vehicle
The prototype ER dampers are designed and manufactured and used as actuators for semiactive suspension systems of a small sized passenger vehicle in this paper. The Electro-rheological(ER)fluid used in the prototype ER dampers is fabricated and its rheological properties are measured by using a rotary rheometer. The ER dampers operate in the flow mode-type.The field-dependent damping force of the ER dampers are evaluated by experimental setup. The field test results show that the ER dampers can supply an available damping force for semi-active suspension systems. The four sliding mode controllers are designed to control vehicle semi-active suspension systems with ER dampers.Control characteristics for vibration suppression of the full vehicle system under various road conditions are evaluated in frequency domain. The results show that the heave, pitch and roll accelerations of the sprung mass and tire deflection were significantly reduced. The sliding mode control demonstrates a good robustness against parameter uncertainties and control effectiveness.
