Flapping Performance of a Flapper actuated by the Compressed LIPCA

In this work,the characteristics of an insect-mimicking flapper actuated by a unimorph compressive actuator LIPCA(LIghtweight Piezo-Composite Actuator)have been experimentally investigated.The passive wing rotation,wing flexibility and wing clap have been mimicked and implemented in the present flapper.The performances of two flappers actuated by the original LIPCA without compression and the compressive LIPCA,respectively,in terms of vertical force generation,flapping frequency and flapping angle have been experimentally explored by using a highly sensitive load cell and examining image by image taken by a digital high-speed camera.The results showed that we could improve the vertical force 22% and increase the flapping angle 22% by using the compressive LIPCA.
