A New Arching PZT Actuator and Its Application in Vibration Control of Smart Structures

In this study an arching PZT actuator(APA)is designed to solve the problem of installation limits and to improve the actuating ability of PZT patch actuator(PPA)in structure vibration control.The APA consists of an arching pedestal and a PZT patch,and it can be mounted on various structural surfaces and be reusable.Firstly,the characters of APA are investigated,which include the analysis of its free-end deformation amplifying principle,the test of the deformation output character and dynamic response character.The results demonstrate that the deformation output of APA is rather large and it can work stably in a wide frequency range.Secondly,comparative active vibration control experiments are implemented on cantilever beams with the use of APA and PPA respectively.Experimental results show that the behaviors of APA are much better than that of the PPA,especially for higher order mode vibration control of cantilever beam.
