Development of the Smart Maintenance and Management System for Soil Slope Structures

Many landslides occur in Asian countries during rainy season.The main course of the soil slope failures during the rainy season is the rainfall condition such as the rainfall intensity and duration.Rainfall infiltrates into the soil slope and makes the matric suction lost in the slope and positive pore water pressures develop near the surface of the slope,which causes to decrease the resisting shear strength.Thus it is required to develop a smart maintenance and management system for the soil slope structures based on the concept of the unsaturated soil mechanics.In this paper,important factors such as rainfall condition,water content and matric suction were measured using smart sensors in a compacted slope in a highway road construction site.The smart sensors were installed in several depths of the slope to investigate the shallow slope behavior.The collected data were sent to a server computer by wireless CDMA communication.Measurement results were compared with the numerical analysis results for the given slope condition.A proper evaluation method of the state of the slope stability was developed to predict any possible slope failures in the critical rainfall condition or at the critical infiltration depth.The real-time monitoring of the affecting factors in the slope structure can be used to evaluate at real-time slope stability variation based on an important standard value.This smart measurement and evaluation system can also be used to alarm the possibility of slope failures according to the degree of danger.Besides,the developed smart maintenance and management system will prevent from the disaster of the landslides and minimize the loss of life and money.
