A tailor-made MR damper for bridge cable vibration control: experiment and modelling

Magnetorheological(MR)dampers have emerged as one of the most promising devices to suppress cable vibration in cable-stayed bridges.A self-sensing MR damper system, integrating an actuation-only MR damper with a lead zirconate titanate(PZT)piezoceramic sensor, has recently been tailor-made for bridge-cable vibration control.Possessing the sensing-while-damping function, the novel system offers potential for real-time semi-active cable vibration control. This paper reports the laboratory experiment and modelling of the self-sensing MR damper system.Tests on an MTS machine under a wide spectrum of displacement amplitude, vibration frequency and current input verify the attractive dual-function.A dynamic model is then formulated based on NARX(nonlinear autoregressive model with exogenous inputs)and neural network(NN)techniques. The developed NARX NN is trained and validated using the experimental data. Results show that the NARX NN model accurately describes the forward dynamics of the MR damper, which will be further incorporated into a closed-loop control algorithm for real-time semi-active cable vibration control.
