Analysis and Design of SMA Damper

Using the shape memory effect and the pseudo-elastic characteristics of SMA,some devices can be designed as damper,by which the structures can be protected from seismic damage and wind induced damage,so the response of structures will be reduced significantly.The devices developed using shape memory alloy can well resolve the problems that present in some other energy dissipation devices.In this paper,a self-adaptive control device is brought forward and its control strategy is explained.Application of pseudo-elasticity property of SMA in the structural control is discussed.Finally,the install position on muti-freedom structures of this device is also discussed.A new damper of SMA is designed,and then a shaking table experiments is carried out for a steel structure model with the SMA damper.
