Sensor-integrated biofeedback smart system for measuring human biological expressions

Understanding of human state is essential in human-machine interaction.Human mental states include mental workload, emotion, distraction, fatigue, drowsiness, etc. They are known to be sensitive to the task performance of a human-machine system; yet they are less understood and not effectively incorporated into contemporary machine systems.Take the driver-vehicle system as an example,on one hand, advanced vehicle safety technologies have been developed to assist drivers,e.g.collision warning system in preventing potential crashes; on the other hand, the capabilities and limitations of the driver,to respond to these safety technologies, need to be carefully examined. Therefore, how to understand human state becomes a main concern. In particular, how to reliably sense human state in real-time and in a non-intrusive way? The current research is focused on(1)real-time sensing and(2)non-intrusive sensing.A non-intrusive sensor-integrated system is developed in driver-vehicle systems to measure driver’s biological states including heart rate, skin conductance, skin temperature, gripping force and position.Experiments were carried out to verify the smart system design. This smart system has potential to be applied to intelligent human-machine interactions.
