Structural damage detection using static strain data

Structural health monitoring(SHM)is expected to play a key role in ensuring the sustainability of the nation’s civil infrastructure. In recent years, researchers have developed numerous damage detection methods to localize and quantify damage. The damage locating vector(DLV)method proposed by Bernal(2002)has received significant attention because of effectiveness in localizing damage in structures. This paper investigates an extension of the DLV method to allow use of static strain measurements.A series of numerical simulations and laboratory experiments have been conducted to validate the approach, termed herein as the strain DLV method. From these results, the strain DLV method is shown to determine damage locations successfully using a smaller number of sensors, even when the strain at the damaged element is not available.
