Real-time Substructure Testing with Equivalent Force Control Method and its Application to Smart Damping

The equivalent force control(EFC)method replaces the numerical iteration with a force feedback control loop for solving the nonlinear equation of motion in a real-time substructure test(RST)using implicit time integration algorithm. In this paper the actual tests with the spring element as the physical substructure are performed to further validate the EFC method. The numerical and experimental results show that the EFC method is very effective if the controller is properly designed. Then,RSTing with EFC was applied to evaluate the performance of JZ20-2NW offshore platform with semi-active magnetorheological(MR)fluid dampers. For comparison, the central difference method with conventional displacement control was also considered in the test. The simulation results validate the stability and accuracy of the EFC method. The results also show that the seismic and ice induced vibration of the offshore platform is effectively controlled with MR dampers.
