Serviceability Conditions in the Design of Suspension Bridges

In a Performance-based Design approach, suspension bridges are designed following classic features against ultimate limit states and in verifying their ability to survive damaged scenarios.Serviceability limit states offer a quite different spectrum of problems, very difficult for suspension bridges.Their design is influenced by the availability conditions, the boundary conditions imposed to the deck, the buffering and damping properties as well as their spatial distribution, the possibility of relying on control devices. This paper discusses the different milestones along the design pattern, focusing attention on the implementation of smart technology solutions with reference to an extreme long span suspension bridge.
