Identification of the inter-story stiffness of shear type structures using the extended Kalman filer

Structural health monitoring for civil engineering has become an important area of research during the last two decades. The goal of this paper is to apply a powerful structural identification tool, the extended Kalman filter(EKF),to evaluate the inter-story stiffness of shear-type structures and assess the structural health condition using the simulated seismic data.In the EKF procedure, the first-order polynomial difference approximation was used to replace the derivatives. The results show that the EKF procedure can identify the inter-story stiffness and damping of the structure efficiently.Comparing the identified inter-story stiffness with original design data,it is possible to evaluate the structural health condition and assess damage in multistory buildings.
