Experimental Study of Tuned Mass Damper in Reducing Floor Vertical Vibration Due to Machinery

Developments and applications of passive tuned mass dampers(TMD)to reduce structural responses against external dynamic loadings like earthquake have attracted many engineers’ attentions in recent years.TMD has merits of low interference and simple maintenance compared with other passive energy dissipation devices. Most researches on passive controls using TMD have focused on its performance and effectiveness in horizontal vibration control.Because the manufacturing equipments in the high-tech factories are vibration sensitive, there is a need to develop a device to mitigate machine-induced floor vertical vibration. This paper investigates experimentally the effectiveness of a passive tuned mass damper(PTMD)moving in vertical direction, named VTMD,in reducing floor vertical vibration under known machine’s loadings. The theoretical background and real applications to two real structures are presented. In addition, two prototype VTMDs are manufactured based on the field test data on a simply-supported steel beam and a two-story school building by the research group at National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan.According to the analysis results, both cases show that with the installation of VTMD,the absolute vertical accelerations are significantly decreased by 80% for the steel beam and by 32~54%(based on various sensor locations)for the school building under harmonic machine loadings. These experimental results concluded the success of the proposed VTMD.
