Design approaches of mitigating cable vibration using MR dampers on the cable-stayed bridges

Large amplitude cable vibrations have been observed in numerous of cable-stayed bridges worldwide and vibration mitigation has become one of the critical issues in this type of bridges.Mitigating cable vibration using magneto-rheological(MR)dampers on stay cables is a new technique with the good prospects. It is the key issue to investigate the respective design method for estimating optimal voltages input to MR dampers. In this paper,a series of tests are conducted, and a nonlinear biviscous MR damper model is developed and the empirical formula of equivalent viscous factors for MR damper is derived.Taking account into cable sag, bending stiffness and inclining angle, the revised Pacheco’s design curve and the optimal design method of mitigating cable vibration by MR dampers is proposed. The field test results show that the method is feasible.
