ADAPTIVE QUADRATIC SUM SQUARES ERROR WITH UNKNOWN INPUTS FOR DAMAGE IDENTIFICATION OF STRUCTURES

The ability to detect damages real-time on-line,based on vibration data measured from sensors, will ensure the reliability and safety of structures. The problem is quite challenging, especially when the excitations and the responses are not completely measured.Traditional time-domain analysis techniques, such as the least square estimation(LSE)method and the extended Kalman filter(EKF)approach, require that all the external excitations(inputs)be available, which may not be the case for some structural health monitoring systems. In this paper,we propose a new analysis method, referred to as the adaptive quadratic sum squares error with unknown inputs(AQSSE-UI),for the identification of structural damages. In this approach, external excitations and some structural responses may not be measured.Analytical recursive solution for the proposed AQSSE-UI method will be derived and presented. The advantages of this new approach over currently available techniques will be discussed. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed approach will be demonstrated using a plan frame with finite-element model.Simulation results indicate that the proposed approach is capable of:(i)tracking the changes of structural parameters leading to the identification of structural damages, and(ii)identifying the unknown external excitations.
